The National Cybersecurity Awareness Month October\n2019 theme is \u201cOWN IT. SECURE IT. PROTECT IT.\u201d This theme emphasizes three\nroles each individual plays in online safety and enhancing cybersecurity at\nhome and at work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022         \n\u201cOWN IT: Understand Your Digital Profile.\u201d Many individuals have several\naccounts on various social media platforms and use a variety of apps on their\ndevices that can present opportunities for malicious actors to compromise\nsensitive personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022         \n\u201cSECURE IT: Secure Your Digital Profile.\u201d The web is a vast, information-dense\nspace filled with digital footprints that make it easy for cybercriminals to\nobtain personal information about potential victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022         \n\u201cPROTECT IT: Maintain Your Digital Profile.\u201d Understanding and modifying\nsecurity settings, creating strong passwords, and implementing multi-factor\nauthentication are effective ways to secure your online accounts and protect\nyour data. All of these measures are a part of good cyber hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cybersecurity is a shared\nresponsibility. Cybercriminals do not discriminate and can target home users,\nsmall businesses, and large corporations at any time. Although National\nCybersecurity Awareness Month is a collaborative effort between government and\nindustry to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity every\nOctober, it is important to be cyber smart and continue cybersecurity best\npractices all year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We often\nsee reports of vishing (or voice-based phishing) scams, a form of social\nengineering, conducted by impersonating trustworthy people or entities over the\nphone in an attempt to convince a target to divulge personal or financial\ninformation or take an action, such as allowing remote access to their device.\nThese criminals will often conduct preliminary reconnaissance on their targets\nbefore attempting to make contact in order to craft the most believable\nscenario possible. They may impersonate an individual within an organization or\nan external entity, such as an internal help desk employee or external\ntechnical support specialist. Incoming calls may show up as unrecognized or\nspoofed phone numbers which appear as though they are coming from a known\ncontact. We highly recommend users refrain from answering unexpected\ncalls from unknown or suspicious numbers. If these calls are answered, do not\nrespond to any requests for sensitive information and hang up immediately. If\nsuspicious inquiries are made from representatives of a trustworthy entity,\ncall them back using a known legitimate phone number to verify the\nauthenticity of a request. Do Something About It<\/a> for\nadditional information and tips about phone scams. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
